Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) — Competitor Profile

Category: Dedicated Deep Linker (Historical — Discontinued) Website: firebase.google.com/docs/dynamic-links (archived) Provider: Google Launched: ~2016 | Shut Down: August 25, 2025 Status: ❌ Deprecated and shut down. All links now return 404. No new links can be created.

Positioning

Firebase Dynamic Links was Google's free deep linking service, bundled within the Firebase platform. It was the default choice for thousands of indie developers and small teams who needed deferred deep linking, QR codes, and cross-platform routing without paying for an enterprise MMP. Its shutdown in August 2025 created a massive migration wave — and a market gap that ChottuLink, Branch, and others rushed to fill.

Why it matters for OptoLink: FDL set the expectation that deep linking should be free and simple. Every competitor is now measured against that baseline. Understanding FDL's feature set and quotas is essential for positioning OptoLink's pricing and free tier.

Why Google Shut It Down

Google announced deprecation in 2023, with full shutdown on August 25, 2025. Official reasoning:

  • Low adoption relative to other Firebase services
  • Maintenance burden for a feature with declining usage
  • Redirecting resources toward other Firebase growth areas

Impact: All existing FDLs (including custom domains and page.link subdomains) stopped resolving. Teams had to migrate to Branch, ChottuLink, Airbridge, or build custom solutions.

Strengths (Historical)

  • Completely free — no billing, no tiers, no MAU caps
  • Dead simple — integrate SDK, create links, done. Minimal configuration
  • Google/Firebase ecosystem — tight integration with Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Auth
  • Generous API quotas — 200K links/day was more than enough for most teams
  • Industry standard — thousands of tutorials, Stack Overflow answers, sample code
  • Custom domains at no cost — unlike competitors that gate this behind paid tiers

Weaknesses (Historical)

  • No paid attribution — if you needed cross-channel ad attribution, FDL wasn't the tool
  • Limited analytics — basic click/install counts only; no cohort analysis, no LTV tracking
  • No fraud detection — completely absent
  • No webhooks or advanced API — limited programmatic control
  • Google's commitment was uncertain — deprecation was years in the making, leaving teams anxious about the platform's future
  • Declining support — minimal updates in the years before shutdown
